Bringing old
time rock and roll into the twenty-first century, the present day version of
the Crew Cuts is performing to enthusiastic and appreciative crowds all over
the United States. When the Crew Cuts take the stage, they take you back to
happier times. They take you back to days of sock hops, soda fountains, and
45 rpm records -- to days when the music made you feel good instead of feeling
like turning it off. The Crew Cuts will turn you on like no other oldies
group today. According to Wink Martindale, television host, syndicated radio
host, and a million selling artist in his own right, the Crew Cuts are “the
best singing fifties group working today,”
Doo-Wop
The biggest hit for the Crew Cuts was
“Sh-Boom, Sh-Boom”, which went to Number One in the nation and in all
international markets, as well. It is remembered as the very first song to
serve as a bridge between swing and rock and roll. Using a full big band but
with a doo-wop flavor, it was an instant success. Doo-wop, a language of
nonsense syllables used to accent a melody or chord changes, and also acting
like a vocal rhythm instrument, began on the streets. Having no instruments,
accapella groups began to make sounds like the instruments and it evolved into
a more structured form of accompaniment. In the case of “Sh-Boom”, the song
begins with “Hey, nonny, ding dong, a-lang-a-lang-a-lang, boom, ba-do and ba-do,
babob, eh” (Easy for YOU to say!) The second big hit for the group was
“Earth Angel”, voted the best slow dance song of the 50’s. Though the
Penguins’ version sold more records, the Crew Cuts’ version featured a
16-piece band and set the stage for many more hits by the four clean-cut lads
from Canada.
The
Members
The group
today most often features lead tenor Michael Redman, a former Ray Conniff
Singer, and a member of The Lawrence Welk Show for several years. The Crew
Cuts were brought back to life by tenor, Bob Duncan, a former singer on the
Lawrence Welk Show and a member of the Diamonds for many years. Singing
baritone is Joe Dickey, a former member of the Ray Charles Singers and
Doodletown Pipers, as well as having logged 8 years as a lead singer in the
Las Vegas production show, “Hallelujah Hollywood”. The bass in the group is
Skip Taylor, a radio and voice-over personality, and a veteran of many
outstanding vocal groups all over Southern California. All four have numerous
other credits, including stage, radio, television, films, and nightclubs.
A Memorable Show
When this group performs,
they do what they love to do most. Combining high-energy rock ‘n’ roll, with
beautiful ballads, and truly great vocal harmonies, the Crew Cuts are creating
excitement everywhere they go. They sing not only the Crew Cuts’ hits, but
bring to the stage the hits of many other groups from the past, performed in
the Crew Cuts’ own style. Their magnetic personalities, their great sense of
humor, and their involvement with the audience, produce a truly memorable
experience for young and old alike. Almost without exception, audience
members say that it’s the best show they’ve attended all year. When you come
to a Crew Cuts concert, you can lean back, take a look at your past, and know
that it’s still part of your future. This world-renowned group creates an
experience NOW that you’ll remember for years to come.
